May the Force of Chanukah Be With Us as We Battle Climate Change, Ignorance and Greed

Today, having recently watched the new Star Wars film, my wonderful SIL, Robert Geraci (on right), wrote a post for his blog, entitled “Chanukah, Climate Change, and Star Wars” https://robertgeraci.com/2019/12/25/chanukah-climate-change-and-star-wars/ . It moved me, and here’s the how and why;

First of all, I am personally consumed by climate change, and what more it will do to life on earth, so I am uplifted seeing anyone communicate thoughtfully, particularly publicly, about the subject.

Next, I was, and am intrigued by the title, linking Chanukah, climate change, and Star Wars. I am a yuge fan of intersectionality and creativity, and could see them coming!

Robert believes that ”Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” may help folks talk to one another about climate change. He shares that the film “speaks to the power of people in our shared hopes, dreams, and future. In the end, it is not a solitary Skywalker who can defeat evil, but the assembly of people from all across the galaxy.”

He states that “Chanukah is not really about a magic lamp or magic oil”, but “is really a celebration of an impossible military victory by the people against an oppressive government that denied them the right to be Jews”. He compares the “impossible” situation of the Jews with the “impossible” climate crisis in which humanity finds itself today, and suggests in a single-word paragraph, how we might defeat the forces that have created and are fueling climate change; Together.

Robert closes out his blog post with, “Responding to our climate crisis requires that we talk about it. Responding requires science, art, literature, and politics. It requires hope. It requires that we respond to a call for justice. Star Wars tells us that rebellions are built on hope. We can rebel against the economic and political models which will otherwise bring us to ruin. Together, let’s fight for a beautiful world.”

I am grateful to share this fight/work for a beautiful world with Robert!
